A Utah County Sheriff's Deputy was assaulted by an inmate in the jail. The inmate has a long criminal history and has booked into the jail dozens of times. The Deputy was treated at a local hospital.
PRESS RELEASE - January 16, 2018: Early this morning a Deputy in the Utah County Jail was assisting a nurse doing rounds and issuing medication to inmates. During the interaction with one inmate, Victor Luis Valdez, age 26, of Provo, Valdez became unruly with the nurse. The Deputy stepped between Valdez and the nurse in an effort to calm him down. As he did this Valdez assaulted the Deputy. As the assault continued other Deputies responded and subdued Valdez. The Deputy sustained cuts, bruises, and abrasions during the assault. He was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released. Valdez was not injured during the assault. He has an extensive criminal history in Utah and has been booked into the Utah County Jail 36 times. Valdez is currently being held on charges out of Orem including retail theft, criminal trespass, and abuse of psychotoxic chemical solvents. He also struggles with significant mental health challenges. Charges against Valdez in this assault will be filed and may include assault by a prisoner, a third degree felony.
