Three juveniles driving a stolen car led Deputies on a pursuit from Spanish Fork into Spanish Fork Canyon. After they crashed two of them were booked into Slate Canyon Youth Detention Center.
PRESS RELEASE January 18, 2018: On January 16, 2018, at about 10:40 PM, a Detective with the Utah County Sheriff's Office attempted to make a traffic stop on a car near Center Street and Main Street in Spanish Fork. They first checked the license plate on the car, a 1989 Mercedes, while on I-15 and it had no record in the state database. The suspects led the Detectives and Deputies on this pursuit at speeds in excess of 80 MPH on Center Street. They continued onto SR-6, entering Spanish Fork Canyon driving east, at speeds in excess of 110 MPH. At that point the suspects drove into oncoming traffic, but otherwise traffic was light. At about mile marker 186 on SR-6 the driver lost control and slid off the highway. The 17 year old driver and a 16 year old passenger, both boys, ran from the crash, leaving a 13 year old boy in the car. The older boys ran toward the south not knowing it was a very steep embankment. After a 20-30 minute search, Deputies using a handheld Forward Looking Infrared Radar (FLIR) device located the 16 and 17 year old boys on the hillside. At that point they gave up without further incident. While the body of the stolen car was not seriously damaged it sustained serous undercarriage damage and is estimated to be a complete loss. The 16 and 17 year old boys sustained minor injuries when they tumbled down the embankment when they ran from the crash scene. They were treated at a local hospital and released.
The boys in this incident had been reported as runaways from a residential treatment facility in Provo around 8:00 PM that evening. The boys told Detectives they stole the car from a parking lot in and industrial complex west of Geneva Road in the area of 1250 South in Orem. The owner of the car, who was working in the area, did not know his car had been stolen. The 16 year old boy admitted he initially stole the car and drove it, but he later traded places with the 17 year old boy. They told Detectives they intended to drive to Las Vegas, Nevada. While he was with them, Detectives believe the 13 year old boy did not want to be involved with stealing the car or fleeing when the Detective tried to stop them. The 16 and 17 year old boys were booked into the Slate Canyon Youth Detention Center in Provo. They will face charges related to stealing the car and fleeing from law enforcement. The 13 year old boy was returned to the residential treatment center.
